Study English - IELTS Preparation, produced in partnership with UTS:INSEARCH, is a series of programs that develop skills and strategies for intermediate to advanced learners of English - especially those preparing to take the IELTS test.
Each program explores a different aspect of the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills needed for the IELTS test.
Our newest series - Series 3 - is being broadcast on Australia Network throughout 2010. All episodes and additional learning materials are now available online in the Series 3 section of this site.
Study English IELTS Preparation, is a series of English language programs which develops skills and strategies for intermediate to advanced learners of English - especially those preparing to take the IELTS test. Our content draws on authentic material that you can watch, read and listen to, plus study notes, tips and activities for practice and consolidation.
Series 1 Episodes Episode One: Electronic Crime In this episode we look at word families and do some spelling. Episode Two: Vitamin D In this epsiode we look at ways of discussing a topic and the difference between fact and opinion. Episode Three: Company Growth In this epsiode we look at the language of description. We will talk about businesses and different ways to discuss economic information. Episode Four: Rising Dollar In this episode we're going to be making comparisons and looking at prepositions of time. Episode Five: Global Warming In this episode we're going to look at ways of brainstorming, taking notes and developing ideas. Episode Six: Greenhouse Gases In this episode we'll be looking at the language of cause and effect. Plus the names of countries and nationalities. Episode Seven: Enviro-Loo In this episode we'll be talking about the types of language needed to describe processes. Episode Eight: Crocodile Tourism In this episode we'll look at how to use the relative pronouns, that, which and who and practice linking words when speaking English. Episode Nine: ADHD In this episode we'll be talking about acronyms, abbreviations and names. Episode Ten: Solar House In this episode we're going to look at ways of connecting ideas. Episode Eleven: Recounting the Past In this episode we're going to look at ways to talk about something that's happened in the past. Episode Twelve: Carbon Cycle In this epsiode we're going to look at how to describe cycles and also the use and purpose of phrasal verbs. Episode Thirteen: Under the Sea In this epsiode we're going to look at articles, indefinite articles 'a' and 'an' and the definite article 'the'. Episode Fourteen: Junk DNA In this episode we're going to look at conditional sentences. They're sentences that use 'if'. Episode Fifteen: Sea Floor In this episode we're going to look at adjectives - how you order them and how you use them to compare and describe things. Episode Sixteen: DVT In this episode we'll discuss how to talk about things in the future. Episode Seventeen: Water and Ageing In this episode we're going to look at some of the features of formal, written English. Episode Eighteen: Salinity In this episode we'll be looking at language you can use to describe processess, including transition signals. Episode Nineteen: Weather Report In this epsiode we'll be listening to numbers and practise saying and spelling them. Episode Twenty: Torres Strait In this episode we will talk about places, locations and directions. Episode Twenty One: Watching Birds In this episode we'll learn about the continuous tense and practice some sentence stress. Episode Twenty Two: Finance Report In this episode we will listen to a finance report and learn about numerical data. Episode Twenty Three: Octopuses In this episode we're going to talk about ways to describe appearance, character and behaviour. Episode Twenty Four: Perfect Siesta In this episode we are going to look at intonation - the meaning behind the tone of your voice. Plus we review the use of the comma. Episode Twenty Five: Copyright In this episode we will talk abut simple present tense, definitions and technical vocabulary, all the things you need to know and use to write a report. Episode Twenty Six: Urban Archaeology In this episode we are going to look at classification - how things are sorted into classes or groups. Plus we will practice the pronunciation of final s sounds.
Series 2 Episodes Episode One: Eye Testing In this episode, we talk about pronouns, homonyms and practise using suffixes. Episode Two: Ginseng In this episode we look at different ways to use the word say, plus common collocations. Episode Three: Jarrah Forest In this episode we will learn about words that describe spatial relationships or where things are in relation to one another. Episode Four: Clouds In this episode we will find out all about paragraphs. Plus the words we use to describe weather. Episode Five: Virtual Doctor In this episode we will look at linking words in spoken English. Plus the many uses of the word there. Episode Six: Lasers In this episode we will practise structuring a description of how something works and work on vocabulary for describing colours. Episode Seven: Mars In this episode we are going to practise using the words some and any. We will also build up our vocabulary about space and astronomy. Episode Eight: Air Archive In this episode we will take a look at tenses. Particularly present perfect and simple past tenses. Episode Nine: Whale Sharks In this episode we will look at the use of contractions in spoken English. A contraction is a shortened form of a word. Episode Ten: Durians In this episode we will look at the how to use reflexive and demonstrative pronouns in written and spoken English. Episode Eleven: Mangroves In this episode we will talk about the language of speculation and how to identify the future tense. Episode Twelve: Cane Toads In this episode we will talk about expressing attitude and using the words so and such. Episode Thirteen: Welding In this episode we'll look at the use of word form groups such as noun, verb and preposition phrases. Episode Fourteen: Termites In this episode we will discuss tenses and different ways of making comparisons. Episode Fifteen: Astronomer In this episode we will talk about the IELTS Speaking and Reading tests. Episode Sixteen: Glass Artist In this episode we will discover how English users indicate negative meanings. Series 3 Episodes Episode One: IELTS Assessment Criteria In this episode we look at some of the features that will be assessed in the writing and speaking modules. Episode Two: Writing Task Response In this episode we'll look at the writing task in the essay section of both the academic and general IELTS tests. Episode Three: Coherence and Cohesion in Writing In this episode we'll look at writing an essay and how to organise your ideas in a paragraph. Episode Four: Sentence Types This episode looks at sentence types and how to use them to demonstrate grammatical range and accuracy. Episode Five: Vocabulary Range This episode looks at strategies for meeting the vocabulary criteria used to assess IELTS candidates. Episode Six: Question Tasks and Topics In this episode we'll look at question tasks and topics in the essay section of the IELTS test Episode Seven: The Speaking Test In this episode we'll look at the IELTS Speaking Test and watch how some candidates answer the questions. Episode Eight: Speaking Fluently Fluency is one of the skills assessed in the IELTS Speaking Test. This episode defines fluency and how to achieve it. Episode Nine: Speaking Coherently Today we'll look at some of the language devices you can use when discussing a topic. Episode Twenty One: Talking about the Family The family is a common topic in IELTS, especially in Part 1 of the Speaking Test. Episode Twenty Two: Talking about Holidays and Leisure Time Being able to discuss holidays and what people do in their leisure time is useful for IELTS. Episode Twenty Three: Talking about Food The topic of food often comes up in the IELTS Speaking Test. Episode Twenty Four: Word Formation A useful skill in all aspects of English is knowing how prefixes and suffixes form new words.
