Notes:
After much deliberation I decided on ColorYUV(levels="TV->PC").tweak(bright=5) as the best way to fix levels while avoiding crushed blacks. I also tried adjusting contrast and different input/output levels but none were any better. It's a conservative adjustment overall so a few scenes still look a bit grey or overly dark. Still an enormous upgrade over the Criterion!

I had fun comparing the wealth of audio tracks available between the two sources and I'll go ahead and explain for those who dig this sort of thing (as I do). The main audio comes from the Japanese BD and it sounds much better than the Criterion mono (less boosted highs and consequently much less noticeable background noise/hiss) -- it just sounds so much more natural. The 3.0 Perspecta mix on the Toho BD however is absolute garbage -- lots of drops distortion and fluctuations in volume. The Criterion 3.0 is much better so I've included that instead (though it is still boosted). I personally prefer the Toho mono mix by wide margin so it's the default track. The whole Perspecta thing is pretty gimmicky anyway with lots of weird out-of-place pans during fight sequences (albeit probably authentic to how it sounded in the 60s). There's also a 5.1 mix available on the Toho BD but I don't particularly care for it either -- it's modernised presumably mixing some of the original score elements still available with the significantly lower fidelity mono dialogue. Anyway I know most people usually just go for whichever track has the most channels but I implore you to give the included mono mix a chance and hopefully you'll agree!

I also included the subtitle translation from the BFI DVD. Criterion's translation has many colloquialisms (American) that BFI thankfully refrained from using in theirs. But BFI simplifies most lines and theirs is probably less of a direct phrase-by-phrase translation. Yet they still often manage to summarise things more elegantly than Criterion. The Criterion subs are probably more complete overall so they're the default track.

Sadly a few words from scholar Stephen Prince were harmed in the syncing of his commentary. The guy starts talking as soon as the Criterion logo comes up so his opening anecdotes had to be cut off to match the Toho BD. He's not really that engaging anyway. ;)

A huge thanks to FlashGit for all his continued help!
