Ludwig Göransson was hired to compose the film's score by April 2017. This is his third feature film collaboration with Coogler, after Fruitvale Station and Creed. Göransson "felt incredible pressure to pay homage to African culture and its traditional music. It’s not lost on me that I’m a Swedish guy from one of the coldest countries in the world." Göransson traveled to Senegal and South Africa to record local musicians to form the "base" of his soundtrack. He accompanied Baaba Maal on his tour throughout Senegal, recording Maal and other Senegalese artists Maal introduced to him. Maal sings in the Fula language on some of the tracks. While in Africa, Göransson became fond of the sound the talking drum produced, which he incorporated as the sound for T'Challa and "was the first seed of how the instrumentation affected the process." He also came across the tambin, which was incorporated in his sounds for Erik Killmonger. Göransson sent his tambin recordings to Michael B. Jordan, who plays Killmonger, to help him prepare for the role. A sabar drummer performed "challenge rhythms" for T'Challa's competitors and the kora and vuvuzelas "provided additional color" for Göransson.
